This is Athens 2004-esque for Rio de Janeiro 2016.
I believe the only cities that are financially stable to host the Olympics are London, Paris and Los Angeles.
This is the problem with having the olympics somewhere new every 4 years. All these new places are built and are then left abandoned. If you're gonna bid for the Olympics you should also need to have a plan for what you're using the infrastructure for after the games
The Olympics are and have always been the most disgusting waste of time, money, and resources.
It just goes to show that the Olympics should only be held in Countries that need minimal construction and have venues in place that can hold the sports. This is tragic that a country struggling owes so much money for something they are no longer seeing any gain from. Very sad.
The IOC shouldn't grant the Olympic Games to cities that do not have a solid business plan to boost the local economy, before, during and after the games. If they are going to spend the millions there has to be a business plan and a contingency plan in place on how it will re-structure the economy.
I live in Atlanta. The majority of our venues (especially the smaller ones) are dumps and being torn down. The old tennis facility is going down soon.Guess it just happens.
If youre a so-called "emerging" economy...hosting an Olympics is about the worst return on an investment as you can get. Not enough people have the means to make use of the facilities, and the government cannot afford to keep up the cost of maintaining them.
Brazil and Greece had vibrant strong economies until they were screwed over by the IOC and are near bankruptcy.
This is why LA is a perfect location. Going to use facilities that are already in use and will be in use for many years post-olympic games.
Very sad to see. Those were incredible venues last year. The people in Rio knew this would happen. Millions of dollars wasted. You could've put that money into all the impoverished areas of Rio.
